24p
Public Art Installation, 2017
Created in aircraft aluminum with industrial coatings, 24P is a public artwork installed at the Calgary Film Centre that pays homage to the standard 24-frame-per-second rate of traditional film. A black 16:9 "screen" forms the backdrop — a blank slate representing unrealized potential — while 24 reflective aluminum slats stand in for the individual frames of a film strip in motion. Angled at 45 degrees, the slats capture and fragment the surrounding environment in real time, drawing passing pedestrians and traffic into the work and making them part of the film experience. The edges of each frame are painted in spectrum colors, nodding to light as the essential ingredient of the cinematic image. The piece reads identically from both sides, though the frames mirror each other in opposite directions. This piece has been created in collaboration with Bram Timmer and fabricated by Carvel Creative in Calgary.
