Commissioned through an open call for Southern Alberta artists, I designed The Bit Portal – a two-panel gate and grill for the outdoor studio of the CASA Community Arts Centre in Lethbridge. Conceived in 2013 and fabricated and installed in May 2014, the project challenged me to create a design that both complemented the building's modern architecture and stood on its own as an independent artwork.

Drawing from a pixel and glitch art aesthetic, I built my concept around the arrangement of squares and rectangles in clustered, dynamic compositions. The resulting work serves as both a functional barrier and a symbolic one - the geometric clusters of shapes representing the many art forms that come together within the space.

 

The Bit Portal was officially unveiled at CASA's one-year anniversary celebration, where I presented alongside other commissioned artists. The Gate and Grill were fabricated by Charlton & Hill Ltd. in Lethbridge using water cut steel and automotive paint.
